Mary Sue Murray
Thirteenth Congressional District

Dr. Murray was born in Brunswick and grew up in Darien, Georgia. After graduating from Darien High School, she attended Shorter College where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She received her Masters in English Education from the University of Georgia, her Educational Specialist in Administration Supervision from West Georgia College and her Doctor of Philosophy from Georgia State University where she majored in Curriculum and Instruction.

Dr. Murray has taught second, third, and sixth grades in the public schools of Georgia. Her administrative experiences include assistant principal, curriculum director, language arts specialist, staff development director, personnel director and assistant superintendent. She has also taught graduate level courses at The State University of West Georgia and Piedmont College.

Dr. Murray served as President of the Georgia Staff Development Council and made several presentations at national conferences. A member of Phi Delta Kappa, she was a founder and charter member of the Kennesaw Mountain Chapter. Seeing a need for educators to meet on a regular basis to discuss curriculum, she was instrumental in founding MAIL (Metro Area Instructional Leaders). She has served on many state advisory committees and written for publication.

Since retiring in 1999, Dr. Murray has served as SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) consultant and chairperson for numerous schools in Georgia. She serves as a consultant in many areas including developing beliefs, mission statements and goals, and team building.

A lifelong interest in the arts has led Dr. Murray to serve as president of the Etowah Creative Arts Council and two terms as president of the Cultural Arts Council of Douglas County. She is a member of the High Museum of Art, Ama-Kanasta Garden Club, and the Nature Conservancy. She was a founding member of St. Peter and Paul Church in Cobb County is now a member of St. Julian's Church in Douglasville.

Dr. Murray and her husband Ed have four children, Randy Murray of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Anna Williams of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Matt Williams of Houston, Texas, Emma Jordan of Douglasville, and two grandchildren, Sam and Sarah Williams of Houston. Dr. Murray's hobbies include cooking, reading, gardening, and travel.
