J. Grant Lewis, M.D.
Eleventh Congressional District

Dr. Lewis practices internal medicine in Rome. He currently is on staff at several hospitals including Floyd Medical Center, Redmond Park Hospital and Beverly Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, all in Rome. Lewis earned undergraduate degrees from both Oxford College and Emory University and a medical degree from Emory University’s School of Medicine. He also served on the Georgia Composite State Board of Medical Examiners. Lewis has three grown children and seven grandchildren.Grant Lewis was born in Cedartown, Georgia and attended public schools there before entering Emory University in 1967. In his third year at Emory he was admitted to Emory Medical School. Upon his graduation he entered a residency program in Internal Medicine at Emory affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta. While in college he met fellow Emory student Barbara Jean Hill who completed her BS in Biology and obtained a Graduate Degree in Medical Technology. For 39 years, they worked alongside each other in medical activity ministering to the people of the Northwest region of the state. Before she passed away unexpectedly in July of 2010, His wife had been extremely active in public school matters in Floyd County. All three of their children attended Floyd County Public Schools. Both Grant and Barby were active in sports and followed their children's interest in various school sports as well. A special scholarship fund to provide for a high school female athlete has been set up in the name of Barbara Lewis in her memory.

Upon completing his residency in 1977, Grant re-located to Rome, Georgia and set up a private practice of medicine. He is fully board certified in Internal Medicine. In 1999 he joined Floyd Medical Center's Primary Care Group and served as Associate Director. For a number of years, Grant served on the Georgia State Board of Medical Examiners which oversaw the work of doctors across the state. In 2010 Grant's practice was awarded the title "Practice of the Year in Primary Care". He has served as Chief of Medicine for Floyd Medical Center. He has served on the Board of Trustees at both Floyd Medical and Redmond Regional hospitals. He served a number of years on the Floyd County Hospital Authority. He is an active member of the Rome Rotary Club, and a member of First United Methodist Church of Rome.

In the area of community service, Grant was instrumental in establishing a summer camp for Diabetic Kids known as Kiki's Kids. For over ten years he supervised the running of the organization and served as the Medical Director, so that children afflicted with diabetes could have a healthy educational summer camping experience. He served as Chairman of The World's Largest Bed Race, a community wide kick-off-the-summer-outdoorevent that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various health related purposes-leukemia research in children, women's medical issues, and ultimately the complete construction of a home away from home (My House) on the campus of Floyd Medical which allowed families a place to stay while loved ones were hospitalized. Virtually all the time his children were in school, Grant coached baseball and basketball at both the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club.

There are three children in the Lewis family: Mrs. Rebecca Joann Morrow (Jason) of North Metro Atlanta with children Jacob, Caleb and Micah; Dr. Grant Carlton Lewis (Ashley) of Savannah with children Peyton and Lauren; Mrs. Stephanie Virginia Reeder (Brad) with children Braden and Annalee.

Grant loves various outdoor enterprises. He is a fly fisherman, a golfer, and a sporting clays competitor.

He was appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor Nathan Deal and hopes to "take the processes we have in place and work to use and tailor them to further benefit all students in Georgia now and in the future".
